Inhabited since prehistoric times, Buthrotum was a city of the Epirote tribe of the Chaonians, later a Roman colony and a bishopric. It entered into decline in Late Antiquity, before being abandoned during the Middle Ages after a major earthquake flooded most of the city. In modern times it is an archeological site in Vlor\u00eb County, Albania, some 14 kilometres south of Sarand\u00eb and close to the Greek border. It is located on a hill overlooking the Vivari Channel and is part of the Butrint National Park.<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

The city is considered one of the most important\u00a0archaeological sites\u00a0in Albania. On the strength of the immense wealth of\u00a0cultural,\u00a0historical\u00a0and\u00a0natural\u00a0value with a considerable history, Butrint was declared a\u00a0UNESCO\u00a0World Heritage Site\u00a0in 1992 and further a\u00a0National Park\u00a0in 2000.<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

The coastal village of Ksamil was built<\/sup> in 1966 and is located south of the city of Sarand\u00eb off the road to Butrint.\u00a0 Municipal unit consists of the villages Ksamil and Manastir.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Ksamil is one of the most frequented coastal resorts by both domestic and foreign tourists. It’s Beach and Albania’s Ionian Coast further north was included in the Guardian’s 20 of the best bargain beach holidays for 2013.<\/sup><\/span><\/h4>\n

The main attractions are the nearby Ksamil Islands. The mainland beach is small but clean. During communism, the area became well known for the production of olive oil, lemons, and tangerines.<\/span><\/h4>\n
